Bone by Bone by Bone
4.0 stars. YA. Recommended. The setting is the 1950s south. Young white David befriends Malcolm, who is black, much to the angry disapproval of his father, Dr. Church. His father's a real piece of work. David lives with his dad, grandmother, and Gold Ma (his paternal great-grandmother--oh, she's nasty.) His mother is dead. David is his father's opposite; he's kind, sensitive, compassionate, and thoughtful. After the gruesome murder of Mister Swann, he wonders if his father is a Klan member. Dr. Church has threatened to kill Malcolm if he ever steps foot in his home. Then one day Malcolm does.
